Story: Deserving

Deserving I

Captain Richard Thorton’s diary, 2 June 3221.

Tomorrow, we get what we deserve.
We’ve been in this new world for five years now. Long enough to see that it’s in a bad way.
Humanity has reached to the stars here, and built a sprawling empire. Only - it hasn’t, really. Certainly, humans have spread far and wide. But this is no empire. It’s a collection of worlds run by committees, run in turn by one big committee, what they call the United Nations. It’s run through with softness, rot, decay, and worst of all - vermin.

Instead of conquering the aliens they came across, these humans took them in, coddled them, wasted their resources on them. You can walk down the street and see a dozen different sorts of inhuman creature by the time you get to the shop. And the great lumbering “social security” programs accept the aliens! As if wasting all that money on ungrateful humans wasn’t stupid enough.

But tomorrow, that changes.
General Storm has prepared a plan, a decisive maneuver, that will take this world out of the incompetent hands of the fools at the UN, and deliver it to us. Then, we can have the home we’ve travelled so far to find. And while we’re here, we can fix it up.

Once the UN has been dealt with, we’re going to announce our own policies. We’ll get rid of the handouts to the poor, and unshackle the great corporations so they can build a better economy. We’ll get those horrifying beasts off our streets. We’ll reshape the UN’s pitiful excuse for a navy, and use it to drive human expansion even further.

I’m sure these new policies will be well-received. The people are tired of this cushioned life. They’ll welcome our changes, and they’ll welcome the new colonies we’re going to establish. They’ll welcome our new order, and they’ll welcome our removal of the undesirable life-forms from their view.
We’ll have to be careful, still. We can’t change everything overnight, although tomorrow’s events will be a great start. There will still be lawyers and processes and all the other tedious bureaucracy that goes with reshaping this sad state into a true interstellar empire. We’ll get there, though. Once we own the system, we can make it serve our own purposes.

General Storm’s plan has us arriving at Earth in force. A whole fleet, jumping into orbit at once. The system’s defenses are criminally under-equipped, another thing we’ll be fixing, so we won’t have any difficulty. My own ship will be among those sent sub-orbital, to overfly Stockholm and set the UN council cowering. We’ll show them that we are the strong, and we deserve to lead. I’m sure they’ll co-operate, the weak-minded idiots.

If they don’t, General Storm has a plan for that, too.
